Position: Chicago Match Race Center Summer Internship is an opportunity for young, talented sailors to grow with CMRC and develop their match racing skills. By working closely with a CMRC staff member, interns learn about specific professional sailing industry positions in an intimate and engaging environment. Responsibilities: Primary Roles for all interns: · Assist in all aspects of the operation of CMRC including: coaching/sailing in membership practice; marketing; event planning and preparation; equipment and Houseboat maintenance; membership development; sponsorship events and return Secondary Roles for individuals: Interns will be assigned to work with one staff member and focus in a specific area of responsibility, which will entail approximately 10-15 hours of work per week. · Bosun Intern(s) o Maintain keelboat and powerboat fleets: weekly washing; cosmetic repairs; general upkeep o Preferred skill sets: self-motivated, organized individual interested in exploring this outlet of professional sailing · Event Management Intern(s) o Assist the Organizing Authority in event preparation and management: coordinate regatta logistics; help coordinate and communicate with competitors, regatta staff and volunteers o Preferred skill sets: strong writing and organizational skills, proficient with Adobe, Microsoft Word and Excel · Public Relations/Marketing Intern(s) o Promote CMRC to sailing publications: manage social media outlets; help create promotional materials, newsletters and press releases o Preferred skill sets: strong writing skills, social media and tech savvy · Membership Development Intern(s) o Assist Sailing Director in the improvement of CMRC membership’s match racing skills: coach and sail in membership practices, develop a curriculum for the summer, prepare text and video debriefs, organize intern sailing practice sessions, and facilitate Tom 28 and Elliot 6m charter sessions o Preferred skills include: at least two years of coaching experience at advanced racing level, match racing and/or high-level team racing experience · Media Intern(s) o Work with regatta production team: collect, archive video from practice and regattas; assist with promotional and wrap-up videos for CMRC events o Preferred skill sets: proficient with Final Cut or Adobe Premier and comfortable using digital cameras Position Dates/Hours: We are expecting all interns to spend a minimum of ten weeks with the program, commencing in May or June. - Work Hours: approximately 40 hours a week spent at the match racing center, with as much sailing time as possible
- Non-Event week hours:
- approximately ten-fifteen hours a week to specific position-related work
- sail/coach evening membership practice three days a week (Mon, Thurs, Fri) and work additional corporate sailing events as necessary
- Event week work hours:
- 12-hour days in preparation for and during the events
- Sailing Hours:
- The majority of the intern practice sailing time will be scheduled during non-event weeks.
- Intern grade four/five summer series
- Interns will have the opportunity to compete in (at least) three grade four/five regattas, dates TBD. The objective of the series is to provide the interns with regatta experience, ranking points, and a chance to compete against the membership in a real regatta setting.
Compensation: - $400/week
- $150 bonus for “event weeks”
