POSITION: Coach & Trainer (x2) ORGANIZATION: Oakcliff Sailing Center LOCATION: Oyster Bay, Long Island Description: This is a full-time temporary position for the summer of 2012. Instructors report to the Acorn Program Director. Oakcliff Sailing Center is a unique sailing center located in Oyster Bay, NY, dedicated to raising the level of sailors and sailing in the United States. In our signature program, high-school-aged Acorns participate in an intensive three-week training camp, while college-aged Saplings spend the entire summer learning match racing, offshore racing, boat work and business management. Both programs serve as a farm team for the Oakcliff All-American Offshore Team, and beyond that, students will be prepared to participate in a Volvo or America’s Cup campaign. We are currently seeking two instructors capable of providing high-level race coaching to students age 16-24 in our six Swedish Match 40s, six Melges 24s, six Shields, two Farr 40s and three custom IRC boats. Instructors will also implement classroom and hands-on intstruction in boat repair, maintanence and theory. This position requires a creative, energetic person with strong organizational skills, who is self-motivated, adaptable and patient. Applicants should be genuinely interested in creating opportunities for our students by advancing their knowledge, skill and leadership ability. Minimum qualifications: BA or higher Prior experience working with individuals age 16-24 Thorough understanding of the Racing Rules of Sailing Current CPR and basic first aid certifications (before May 14th) Prior experience coaching on keelboats Criminal and background checks required Preferred Qualifications: Significant prior experience working with individuals age 16-24 Two years as a boat captain, program manager or coach of a grand prix sailing program Extensive boat maintanence experience Certification as a judge, umpire or race officer Extensive match racing experience Experience in a variety of high performance keelboats, preferably including offshore experience Primary Responsibilities: Design and implement classroom instruction on match and fleet racing Design and implement classroom instruction on another topic in the Oakcliff curriculum: rigging, sailmaking, navigation, marine electronics, business management — there are a lot of options, and what you teach depends on your qualifications. Oversee student boat repair and keep maintanence logs On the water instruction in tactics, sail trim and boat handling Manage risk among young sailors who may be unfamiliar with large keelboats, winches, and high loads Set practice schedules Additional Responsibilities: Assess student abilities verbally and in writing. Give students timely, constructive feedback, and manage student teams (offshore racing, match racing) Manage logistics of two dozen students, multiple boats and a variety of events, classes, and practices. Ensure students are supervised at all times. Communication: Communicate efficiently with the Acorn Program Director and the Executive Director Work with the Race Program Director to staff events with Acorns & Saplings Talk honestly to students about their skills, areas for improvement, and recommended next steps Dates: Start date is variable, but candidates must be available from May 14 – August 28.
